Bridges in Mathematics Grade 5, Unit 8: Solar Energy & Measurement
In this unit, your child closes the year with problems built around solar energy. They convert measurements within one system, like centimeters to meters or ounces to pounds, inside multi-step problems, and compare two number patterns made from two rules. It draws on the division, decimal, and data work from the unit before, so a year of fifth-grade math meets one real question.

What is my child learning in Unit 8?
- Building two number patterns from two rules, like add 3 and add 6, and noticing each second term is double its partner. Learn more: Comparing two number patterns on a grid
- Converting units within one system, like 250 centimeters to 2.5 meters, as one step in a longer problem. Learn more: Converting feet to yards and grams to kilograms
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Ana and Luis both start with $0. Each week, Ana saves $5 and Luis saves $10. When Ana has $15, how much does Luis have?
- $25
- $40
- $30
How you can help
- Track sunshine or daylight on a calendar for a few days. Ask your child to convert a total in minutes into hours and minutes, like 135 minutes into 2 hours 15 minutes.
- Read a water bottle label together, like 500 milliliters. Ask your child how many bottles make 2 liters, 4, and how many liters are in 6 bottles, 3.
- Make two number lists together starting at 0, one adding 2 each time and one adding 4. Ask your child how each pair of matching numbers compares, and why.
Where kids can get stuck
- Dividing when they should multiply, so 4 yards becomes 4 ÷ 3 feet instead of 12 feet.
- Forgetting to convert back at the end, answering 96 ounces when the question asked for pounds.
- Comparing numbers within one list, so they see “adds 3” but miss that the second list is double the first.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- convert
- To change a measurement into a different unit, like feet into inches.
- metric system
- Units like meters, liters, and grams that are based on tens.
- customary system
- Units like inches, feet, pounds, cups, and gallons.
- pattern
- A list of numbers that follows a rule, like 0, 3, 6, 9.
- rule
- The instruction that makes a pattern, like “add 3 each time.”
- corresponding terms
- Numbers in the same position in two patterns, like the third number in each list.
- ordered pair
- A pair like (6, 2) that says how far across, then how far up.
