enVision Mathematics Grade 2, Topic 10: Add Within 1000 Using Models and Strategies
In this unit, your child adds three-digit numbers within 1,000. They use blocks, drawings, and number lines, then a written method that adds hundreds, tens, and ones and regroups when a place reaches 10. They also add 10 or 100 in their head and explain their strategies. Subtracting within 1,000 comes next, with the same models.

Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3
A toy store had 450 toy cars and sold 120 of them. How many toy cars are left?
- 320
- 570
- 330
How you can help
- Add two prices from a flyer, like 245 and 138, and ask your child to add the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones out loud.
- Play "10 more, 100 more" on a walk: you say a number like 586, and your child answers 596 and 686.
- Ask your child to explain a sum to a stuffed animal or a sibling, drawing squares for hundreds, lines for tens, and dots for ones.
Where kids can get stuck
- Writing 2103 or 203 for 10 more than 293, instead of 303.
- Writing each place's total side by side, so 158 + 267 becomes 31115 instead of 425.
- Forgetting to add the regrouped ten into the tens place, so the answer lands 10 short.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- hundreds
- Groups of 100. In 706, the 7 means 7 hundreds, or 700.
- regroup
- Trading 10 ones for 1 ten, or 1 ten for 10 ones, to add or subtract.
- place value
- The value a digit has because of its spot in a number: ones, tens, or hundreds.
- compose
- To put parts together to make a bigger unit, like 10 ones making 1 ten.
- mentally
- In your head, without writing it down or using objects.
- strategy
- A way of solving a problem, like making a ten or counting on.
- sum
- The answer when you add numbers together.
