enVision Mathematics Grade 5, Topic 15: Algebra: Analyze Patterns and Relationships

In this unit, your child builds two number patterns side by side from two rules, such as add 3 and add 6, both starting at 0. They look for how the terms relate, here each second term being double its partner, then write the pairs as ordered pairs and graph them. It uses the coordinate plane just learned and comes before classifying shapes.

Question 1 of 3

Ana and Luis both start with $0. Each week, Ana saves $5 and Luis saves $10. When Ana has $15, how much does Luis have?

  • $25
  • $40
  • $30

How you can help

  1. Compare two savings plans with your child: one saves $2 a week, another $6. Make two lists from $0 and ask how the matching amounts relate, always 3 times as much.
  2. Count stairs together, one step at a time and two at a time, starting at 0. Write the two lists side by side and ask what your child notices about each pair.
  3. Turn two patterns into points: from add 4 and add 8, write pairs like (4, 8) and (8, 16). Plot them on graph paper and ask what the points line up to make.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Looking down one list only, spotting “add 3” but not how each term relates to its partner.
  • Swapping the order in an ordered pair, so they plot (6, 3) instead of (3, 6).
  • Starting the second pattern at the wrong number, so the two lists no longer line up term by term.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

pattern
Numbers that change in a steady, predictable way.
rule
What you do to get from one number in a pattern to the next.
term
One number in a pattern.
corresponding terms
Matching partners from two patterns, paired up to compare or graph.
ordered pair
A pair like (6, 2) that says how far across, then how far up.
graph
A picture of data, like points plotted on a grid.
