Eureka Math² Grade 4, Module 4: Fraction Concepts and Equivalence

In this unit, your child deepens their understanding of fractions. They show why fractions like 3/4 and 6/8 are equivalent, compare fractions with different denominators, and rename tenths as hundredths to add them. It follows the word-problem unit and leads into adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions.

Question 1 of 3

What is the missing number? 4/5 = ?/10

  • 4
  • 9
  • 8

How you can help

  1. Fold two same-size paper strips, one into thirds and one into sixths. Shade 2/3 and 5/6, line them up, and ask your child which is longer and why.
  2. Draw a 10-by-10 grid and shade 7 columns. Ask your child to name it as 7 tenths and as 70 hundredths, then shade 5 more small squares and name the total.
  3. Compare two same-size glasses at dinner, one 2/3 full and one 3/6 full. Ask your child which holds more, and how renaming 2/3 as 4/6 settles it.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Doubling only the denominator, so 1/2 becomes 1/4 when renamed to compare with 3/4.
  • Using the multiplying rule without being able to draw why 2/5 and 4/10 are the same amount.
  • Thinking 4/100 is larger than 3/10 because both its numbers are bigger.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

numerator
The top number of a fraction, telling how many equal parts are counted.
denominator
The bottom number of a fraction, telling how many equal parts make one whole.
equivalent fractions
Fractions that name the same amount, like 3/4 and 6/8.
common denominator
The same denominator shared by two fractions, which makes them easy to compare or add.
tenth
One of 10 equal parts of a whole, written 1/10 or 0.1.
hundredth
One of 100 equal parts of a whole, written 1/100 or 0.01.
number line
A line with numbers at equal distances, used to show and compare amounts.
