Eureka Math² Grade 5, Module 3: Place Value Concepts for Decimal Operations
In this unit, your child carries place value into decimals. They read and write decimals to thousandths, compare and round them, and add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals, using place value charts and estimation to check where the decimal point goes. Tenths and hundredths connect to the fraction work just finished, and the next unit multiplies and divides fractions.

What is my child learning in Module 3?
- Using a place value chart to see that 0.08 is ten times 0.008 and one tenth of 0.8. Learn more: What each digit is worth, including decimals
- Reading and writing decimals to thousandths, like 0.457, and comparing decimals with different numbers of digits. Learn more about reading and writing decimals to thousandths: Reading and writing decimals to thousandths · Learn more about comparing decimals to thousandths
- Rounding decimals to the nearest whole, tenth, or hundredth, like 7.459 to 7.46, to estimate before calculating. Learn more: Rounding decimals, like 4.68 to 4.7
- Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals to hundredths, like 0.6 × 0.3 = 0.18, with charts and estimates. Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
How many hundredths are in 1 tenth?
- 10
- 1/10
- 100
How you can help
- Compare two weights on a deli or produce scale, like 0.62 and 0.6 pounds. Ask your child which is heavier and to round both to the nearest tenth.
- Split a $12.60 lunch bill among 3 people. Ask your child to estimate first, about $12 ÷ 3, then divide to find $4.20 each.
- Ask your child to find the cost of 0.5 pounds of cheese at $6.80 a pound, $3.40. Talk about why multiplying by 0.5 gives less than the price of one pound.
Where kids can get stuck
- Thinking more digits means larger, so 0.457 seems greater than 0.5.
- Looking at every digit to the right when rounding, so 3.149 rounds up to 3.2 instead of 3.1.
- Lining up the right-hand digits instead of the decimal points, so 5.6 + 2.35 becomes 2.91.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- decimal
- A number with a decimal point, like 0.5 or 2.37, showing parts of a whole.
- tenth
- One of 10 equal parts of a whole, written 0.1 or 1/10.
- hundredth
- One of 100 equal parts of a whole, written 0.01 or 1/100.
- thousandth
- The place three spots to the right of the decimal point.
- place value chart
- A chart with a column for each place, used to show what each digit is worth.
- round
- To find the closest tenth, whole number, or other place value.
- compare
- To decide which number is greater, less, or equal, using >, <, or =.
- estimate
- A close guess found with easier numbers, used to check whether an answer makes sense.
