Eureka Math Grade 4, Module 2: Unit Conversions and Metric Measurement
In this unit, your child converts metric measurements, like kilometers to meters, kilograms to grams, and liters to milliliters. They make conversion tables and solve story problems about distance, mass, and liquid volume. It puts last unit's place value work to use, since metric units grow by tens, and leads into multiplying and dividing larger numbers.

What is my child learning in Module 2?
- Converting kilometers to meters, kilograms to grams, and liters to milliliters, and filling in two-column conversion tables. Learn more: Converting feet to inches and kilograms to grams
- Adding and subtracting mixed metric units, like 3 kilograms 400 grams minus 1 kilogram 750 grams, in story problems. Learn more: Story problems about distance, time, and money
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Amara buys a 5-pound bag of oranges. How many ounces does the bag weigh?
- 60 ounces
- 21 ounces
- 80 ounces
How you can help
- Read the label on a 2-liter bottle together. Ask how many milliliters it holds, 2,000, then how many 250-milliliter cups it would fill.
- Check the weight on a bag of rice or flour in grams. If it says 1 kilogram, ask how many grams that is, and how many 100-gram portions it holds.
- Talk about a walk's distance in meters. If a loop is 1 kilometer 200 meters, ask your child how many meters that is, and how far two loops would be.
Where kids can get stuck
- Dividing instead of multiplying when changing kilograms to grams, so 3 kilograms comes out as fewer grams.
- Writing 2 kilograms 50 grams as 2,500 grams instead of 2,050.
- Adding 4 liters and 600 milliliters as 604, without converting to the same unit first.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- convert
- To change a measurement into a different unit, like 3 feet into 36 inches.
- kilometer
- A length equal to 1,000 meters.
- meter
- A metric length a little longer than a yard, equal to 100 centimeters.
- kilogram
- A metric unit of mass equal to 1,000 grams.
- gram
- A small metric unit of mass, about the mass of a paper clip.
- liter
- A metric amount of liquid equal to 1,000 milliliters.
- milliliter
- A tiny amount of liquid; 1,000 milliliters make 1 liter.
- mass
- How much matter is in an object, measured in grams and kilograms.
- conversion table
- A two-column table of matching amounts in two units, like 1 foot and 12 inches.
