Everyday Mathematics Grade 5, Unit 6: Measurement, Decimal Multiplication and Division

In this unit, your child converts between measurement units in the same system, like feet to yards or grams to kilograms, and multiplies and divides decimals to the hundredths. Place value and estimation help them see whether answers make sense. It builds on the fraction operations just finished and leads into multiplying mixed numbers, geometry, and graphs.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Nadia asks for 3/4 pound of sliced turkey at the deli. How many ounces of turkey is that?

  • 4 ounces
  • 9 ounces
  • 12 ounces

How you can help

  1. Read package labels at the store, like a 2.5 kilogram bag of flour. Ask how many grams that is, and how many 500 gram bags would weigh the same.
  2. Measure a room or hallway in feet with a tape measure, then convert to yards and to inches. Talk about why the number gets bigger for smaller units.
  3. Estimate a grocery total with decimals, like 3 bottles at $1.25 or 4 apples at $0.60 each. Multiply together, then compare the answer with your estimate.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Dividing when they should multiply, so 4 yards becomes 4 ÷ 3 feet instead of 4 × 3 = 12 feet.
  • Writing 0.2 × 0.3 as 0.6 instead of 0.06, missing that tenths times tenths make hundredths.
  • Treating 3 ÷ 0.5 like 3 ÷ 2, answering 1.5 instead of counting how many halves fit into 3, which is 6.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
