Go Math! Kindergarten, Chapter 8: Represent Count and Write 20 and Beyond
In this unit, counting keeps growing. Your child counts to 20 and then onward toward 100, by ones and by tens, and learns to begin counting from any number, not just 1. The tens-and-ones idea from the teen numbers helps the patterns make sense. With this bigger range of numbers in place, the next unit turns to naming and describing flat shapes.

Question 1 of 3
What comes next? 10, 20, 30, 40, __
- 60
- 50
- 41
How you can help
- Count steps on a walk past 20 and keep going as long as you can, pausing at numbers like 29 or 39 so your child names the next ten.
- Pick a starting number while waiting in line, such as 31, and take turns saying the next number until you reach 40.
- Count by tens while building towers of 10 large blocks, saying 10, 20, 30 aloud as each tower is finished, until you reach 100.
Where kids can get stuck
- Getting stuck after 29, saying 'twenty-ten' instead of moving on to 30.
- Starting from 1 again to find what comes after 46, even after counting '44, 45, 46' correctly.
- Saying fifteen when they mean fifty while counting by tens.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
