i-Ready Classroom Mathematics Grade 2, Unit 5: Measurement Time and Money
In this unit, your child measures length in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, estimates and compares lengths, and solves length problems on number lines. They show measurements on line plots, tell time to the nearest five minutes, and count money. It is a big, hands-on stretch of the year that comes just before geometry and arrays.

What is my child learning in Unit 5?
- Measuring lengths with rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and tapes, and picking the tool that suits the object. Learn more: Measuring with a ruler, yardstick, or tape
- Measuring one object in two units, such as inches and centimeters, and explaining why the numbers differ. Learn more: Measuring in inches and in centimeters
- Estimating lengths with benchmarks, such as a door being about 2 meters tall. Learn more: Estimating lengths in inches, feet, and meters
- Comparing two measured lengths and finding the difference in inches or centimeters. Learn more: Measuring how much longer one thing is
- Solving word problems with lengths by adding or subtracting and labeling each answer with its unit. Learn more: Story problems about length
- Showing lengths as distances from 0 on a number line and adding or subtracting with jumps. Learn more: Adding and subtracting on a number line
- Telling time to the nearest five minutes on clocks with hands and digital clocks, with a.m. and p.m. Learn more: Telling time to the nearest five minutes
- Solving word problems with dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢. Learn more about solving story problems by counting bills and coins: Solving story problems by counting bills and coins · Learn more about solving story problems about how much money is left
- Measuring several objects and making a line plot of the lengths, then describing what it shows. Learn more: Measuring things and making a line plot
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
A door is measured using which tool?
- Ruler
- Measuring Tape
- Small paper clip
How you can help
- Measure a few things in the kitchen, like spoons and cups, in inches, then make a line plot together with an X for each.
- Ask your child to read a clock with hands at different times of day and to count the minutes by 5s.
- Play store with coins and items under a dollar, and ask your child how much two items cost together and how much change is due.
Where kids can get stuck
- Counting the tick marks on a ruler instead of the spaces, so a 4-inch crayon reads as 5 inches.
- Mixing up a.m. and p.m., saying school starts at 8:00 p.m.
- Adding coins as if each were worth 1 cent, so three quarters seem to make 3 cents.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- inch
- A small unit of length, about the width of a grown-up's thumb.
- centimeter
- A small metric unit of length, about the width of a fingertip.
- estimate
- A smart guess about an amount or a length, made before measuring or counting.
- line plot
- A number line with an X above it for each measurement collected.
- number line
- A line with numbers in order at equal spaces, used to count, add, and subtract.
- minute hand
- The long hand on a clock; it shows the minutes.
- a.m.
- The hours from midnight to noon, including the morning.
- cent
- A unit of money, written ¢; 100 cents make one dollar.
- quarter
- A coin worth 25 cents.
