i-Ready Classroom Mathematics Grade 5, Unit 2: Decimals and Whole Numbers (Operations)
In this unit, your child divides whole numbers by two-digit divisors and adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides decimals. They also write and evaluate expressions with parentheses and brackets, which helps them lay out a multi-step plan before solving. Building on the place value unit, it rounds out whole numbers and decimals before the class moves on to adding and subtracting fractions.

What is my child learning in Unit 2?
- Dividing up to four-digit numbers by two-digit divisors, like 2,016 ÷ 32 = 63, with area models and partial quotients. Learn more: Dividing by two-digit numbers, like 480 ÷ 16
- Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals to hundredths, like 12.5 − 3.75 or 2.4 ÷ 0.8. Learn more about adding and subtracting decimals to hundredths: Adding and subtracting decimals to hundredths · Learn more about multiplying decimals to hundredths · Learn more about dividing decimals to hundredths
- Evaluating multi-step expressions with parentheses and brackets, like [(5 + 3) × 2] ÷ 4 = 4. Learn more: Solving number sentences with parentheses
- Writing a multi-step plan as an expression, like 4 × (12.50 + 3), before solving a word problem. Learn more: Turning words into number sentences
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Which equation can you use to find 1,350 ÷ 45?
- 45 × ? = 1,350
- 1,350 × 45 = ?
- 45 ÷ 1,350 = ?
How you can help
- Plan a family outing with your child: 4 tickets at $12.50 plus a $3 snack for each person. Ask them to write 4 × (12.50 + 3) and find the total, $62.
- Ask how many 32-seat buses are needed for 200 students. Let your child divide, 6 with 8 left over, and decide that 7 buses are needed.
- Compare two sizes at the store: 2.4 pounds for $6 and a single pound for $2.75. Ask your child which is the better deal per pound, and why.
Where kids can get stuck
- Writing the partial quotients side by side, so 60 and 3 become 603 instead of 63.
- Treating 2.4 ÷ 0.8 like 2.4 ÷ 8 and answering 0.3 instead of 3.
- Leaving out parentheses, so “4 tickets at $12.50 plus $3 each” becomes 4 × 12.50 + 3.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- dividend
- The number being divided, like 32 in 32 ÷ 4.
- divisor
- The number that tells how many groups, or how big each group is, in division.
- quotient
- What you get when you divide one number by another.
- remainder
- The amount left over when a number does not divide evenly.
- decimal point
- The dot in a number like 4.25 that comes right after the ones place.
- expression
- Numbers and operation signs written together to show a calculation, like 3 × (4 + 2).
- parentheses
- Grouping marks ( ) around the part of an expression to work first.
- brackets
- Grouping marks [ ] that are worked after the parentheses inside them.
- evaluate
- To work out the value of an expression.
