Reveal Math Grade 1, Unit 2: Addition Strategies to 10
In this unit, your child learns ways to add within 10 without counting everything from 1. They count on from a number, switch the order of addends, and practice facts until they come quickly. This follows the opening unit on math stories from daily life and leads into strategies for subtracting within 10.

What is my child learning in Unit 2?
- Knowing that 2 + 7 has the same sum, or answer, as 7 + 2, and starting with the bigger number to add faster. Learn more: Adding in any order to make it easier
- Adding 1, 2, or 3 by counting on from a number, such as 6, then 7, 8 for 6 + 2. Learn more: Counting on and back to add and subtract
- Recalling sums within 10 quickly and accurately, like 4 + 6 and 5 + 3, using strategies they understand. Learn more about adding within 20: Adding within 20 · Learn more about subtracting within 20
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
If you know that 7 + 3 = 10, what is 3 + 7?
- 3
- 10
- 7
How you can help
- Roll one die and add 1, 2, or 3 by counting on. Take turns, and let your child catch you if you start counting from 1.
- Hold up 3 fingers on one hand and 5 on the other. Ask for the total, then swap hands and ask if the total changed.
- Practice making 10 with fingers while waiting for dinner: show 7 fingers and ask how many more fingers make 10. Then let your child quiz you.
Where kids can get stuck
- Starting at the smaller number, counting on 7 from 2 instead of 2 from 7.
- Saying the starting number as the first count, landing on 7 for 6 + 2 instead of 8.
- Solving 5 + 3 and 3 + 5 separately, not yet seeing they have the same sum.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
