Reveal Math Grade 2, Unit 4: Place Value to 1,000

In this unit, your child works with numbers all the way to 1,000. They find out what each digit is worth, count and skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s, write numbers in words and expanded form, and compare numbers using >, =, and <. It builds on equal groups and arrays and gets kids ready for two-digit addition in the next unit.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

How many hundreds are in 300?

  • 3
  • 30
  • 300

How you can help

  1. Look at prices on store shelves and ask your child to read three-digit numbers aloud. Then pick two and ask which one is greater.
  2. Draw three playing cards from ace to 9, like 4, 8, and 2. Ask for the biggest number you can make with them, 842, and the smallest, 248.
  3. Take turns counting by 10s on a walk, starting at a number like 315. See if your child can cross 400 without stopping.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Thinking 199 is more than 210 because it has bigger digits.
  • Reading the 4 in 482 as four instead of four hundred.
  • Writing four hundred thirty-six as 400306, the way it sounds, instead of 436.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

greater than

less than
Smaller than. The sign < means less than, as in 199 < 210.
equal to
The same amount. The sign = means equal to.
