Reveal Math Grade 3, Unit 1: Place Value and Addition/Subtraction

In this unit, your child sharpens number sense with three-digit numbers. Children round to the nearest 10 or 100 and add and subtract within 1,000, using place value, the value a digit has because of its spot in the number. Estimating first helps them catch mistakes. The next unit opens the big idea of third grade: multiplication and division.

Question 1 of 3

What is 43 rounded to the nearest 10?

  • 50
  • 40
  • 30

How you can help

  1. Count the steps on a walk to the end of the block or the park, then round the count to the nearest 10 and the nearest 100 together.
  2. Find how many more: if a book has 312 pages and your child has read 145, ask how many pages are left, and check the answer by adding.
  3. Play 'close to 1,000': take turns naming a three-digit number, like 640, while the other player says what to add to make exactly 1,000.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Rounding to the nearest hundred by looking at the ones digit instead of the tens digit.
  • Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger in each place, so 312 - 145 comes out as 233 instead of 167.
  • Forgetting both regrouped amounts, so 368 + 257 comes out as 515 instead of 625.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
