Reveal Math Grade 4, Unit 12: Measurement

In this unit, your child compares the sizes of units like inches and feet, grams and kilograms, and minutes and hours; converts larger units to smaller ones; and solves word problems with measurement and money. They also use area and perimeter formulas for rectangles. It follows the unit on angles and wraps up fourth grade.

Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3

Amara buys a 5-pound bag of oranges. How many ounces does the bag weigh?

  • 60 ounces
  • 21 ounces
  • 80 ounces

How you can help

  1. Read the labels on drinks at the store: if a bottle holds 2 liters, ask your child how many milliliters that is, and how many 250-milliliter cups it fills.
  2. Measure a rug or a doorway with a tape measure and ask your child to give the length in feet and in inches, then find the perimeter.
  3. Count change after a purchase: if you pay with a $20 bill for something that costs $13.45, ask your child how much change you should get.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Dividing instead of multiplying when changing to a smaller unit, so 4 feet turns into a number smaller than 4 instead of 48 inches.
  • Lining up money amounts wrongly, treating $20 and $13.45 as 20 and 1,345, which gives a wildly wrong amount of change.
  • Multiplying the length and width when a problem asks how much fencing goes around, finding area instead of perimeter.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

convert
To change a measurement to a different unit, like 3 feet to 36 inches.
yard
A customary unit of length equal to 3 feet, or 36 inches.
kilogram
A metric unit of mass equal to 1,000 grams.
milliliter
A small metric unit of liquid volume; 1,000 milliliters make 1 liter.
mass
How heavy something is, measured in grams or kilograms.
liquid volume
How much liquid a container holds, measured in units like liters or cups.
area
The amount of space inside a flat shape, measured in square units.
perimeter
The distance all the way around a flat shape.
formula
A rule written with letters, such as area = length × width.
