Reveal Math Grade 4, Unit 4: Division
In this unit, your child divides numbers of up to four digits by one-digit divisors, using place value, partial quotients, and the connection to multiplication. They interpret remainders and solve multistep word problems. It builds on multiplication from the previous unit and leads into factors and multiples.

What is my child learning in Unit 4?
- Dividing up to four-digit dividends by one-digit divisors with partial quotients, finding remainders, and checking by multiplying back. Learn more: Dividing with remainders, like 87 ÷ 5
- Solving multistep word problems with all four operations, and deciding what a remainder means for the question being asked. Learn more: Multi-step story problems and leftovers

Question 1 of 3
What is 87 ÷ 5?
- 17
- 17 R 2
- 17.2
How you can help
- Deal out a deck of 52 cards among 3 players and ask your child how many cards each player gets and how many are left over.
- Plan for a group: if 45 kids are going on a trip and each table seats 8, ask how many tables are needed and what the remainder means.
- Check every quotient by multiplying back: if your child finds 1,452 ÷ 6, ask them to multiply their answer by 6 to see whether it lands on 1,452.
Where kids can get stuck
- Dropping a zero in the quotient, so 816 ÷ 4 comes out as 24 instead of 204.
- Ignoring the remainder when it matters, so 45 kids at tables of 8 get 5 tables instead of 6.
- Stopping after the first step of a multistep problem, answering with a number the question never asked for.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- dividend
- The number being divided, like 87 in 87 ÷ 5.
- divisor
- The number you divide by, like 5 in 87 ÷ 5.
- quotient
- The answer to a division problem.
- remainder
- The amount left over when a number cannot be divided evenly.
- partial quotients
- Dividing in friendly chunks, like hundreds then tens, and adding the chunks to get the quotient.
- multistep
- Needing more than one calculation to reach the answer.
- interpret
- To decide what an answer, such as a remainder, means in the story.
