Reveal Math Grade 4, Unit 6: Fraction Equivalence
In this unit, your child learns why fractions like 3/4 and 6/8 name the same amount, generates equivalent fractions, and compares fractions with different numerators and denominators. It uses the factors and multiples from the previous unit to find common denominators, and it sets up adding and subtracting fractions next.

What is my child learning in Unit 6?
- Explaining with area models and number lines why multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equivalent fraction. Learn more: Why fractions like 3/4 and 6/8 are equal
- Comparing fractions like 3/8 and 2/5 by renaming them with a common denominator or numerator, and recording it with >, <, or =. Learn more: Comparing fractions like 2/3 and 5/6
Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3
What is the missing number? 4/5 = ?/10
- 4
- 9
- 8
How you can help
- Fold two paper strips of the same length, one into thirds and one into sixths, and ask your child which folds show that 2/3 = 4/6.
- Ask a fair-share question at snack time: would you rather have 3/8 of a tray of bars or 1/2 of it? Have your child explain using eighths.
- Use measuring cups to show that two 1/4 cups fill the same space as one 1/2 cup, then ask how many 1/8 cups would fill it.
Where kids can get stuck
- Multiplying only the denominator, so 3/4 gets renamed as 3/8, which is a smaller amount.
- Thinking 1/8 is bigger than 1/4 because 8 is a bigger number than 4.
- Adding the same number to the numerator and denominator, so 2/3 and 4/5 seem to be equivalent.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- fraction
- A number that names equal parts of a whole, such as 3/4.
- numerator
- The top number of a fraction, which tells how many equal parts are counted.
- denominator
- The bottom number of a fraction, which tells how many equal parts make the whole.
- equivalent fractions
- Fractions that name the same amount, such as 3/4 and 6/8.
- common denominator
- A denominator two fractions share, such as sixths for 2/3 and 5/6.
- common numerator
- A numerator two fractions share, which lets you compare the size of their pieces.
- benchmark fraction
- A familiar fraction, like 1/2 or 1, used to compare other fractions.
