Reveal Math Grade 5, Unit 10: Division of Fractions
In this unit, your child divides with unit fractions in two ways: a unit fraction by a whole number, like 1/2 ÷ 4, and a whole number by a unit fraction, like 5 ÷ 1/3. They use drawings, number lines, and stories to explain each quotient and check it with multiplication. It follows fraction multiplication and leads into geometry.

What is my child learning in Unit 10?
- Dividing a unit fraction by a whole number and a whole number by a unit fraction, and checking each quotient with multiplication. Learn more: Dividing with fractions, like 1/2 ÷ 4
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
What is 3 divided by 1/5?
- 15
- 1/15
- 3/5
How you can help
- Ask how many 1/3-cup scoops are in 2 cups of rice or cereal, then scoop and count to check. Talk about why the answer is bigger than 2.
- Share half of something among several people, like 1/2 of a pizza for 3 kids. Ask what fraction of the whole pizza each one gets.
- Turn a walk or ride into a division question: if a 2-mile trail has a marker every 1/4 mile, how many 1/4-mile sections are there?
Where kids can get stuck
- Flipping the wrong number, so 1/3 ÷ 2 gets worked as 3 × 2 = 6 instead of 1/6.
- Multiplying instead of dividing, so 4 ÷ 1/2 becomes 2 instead of 8, because they expect division to shrink things.
- Confusing sharing with grouping, so 'how many 1/3-cup scoops are in 2 cups' gets 2/3 instead of 6.
