Reveal Math Grade 5, Unit 5: Division of Whole Numbers

In this unit, your child divides numbers up to four digits by two-digit divisors, like 480 ÷ 16. They use area models, partial quotients, and multiplication facts they already know, and decide what a remainder means in a story. It builds on the multiplication unit just before it and leads into multiplying decimals.

Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3

Which equation can you use to find 1,350 ÷ 45?

  • 45 × ? = 1,350
  • 1,350 × 45 = ?
  • 45 ÷ 1,350 = ?

How you can help

  1. Divide something real together, like 1,000 sheets of paper into stacks of 25, or 480 crayons into boxes of 16. Ask your child to estimate first.
  2. Plan seating for a group: if 130 people sit in rows of 12, how many rows are needed? Talk about why the remainder means one more row.
  3. Ask your child to check each division by multiplying back, like 480 ÷ 16 = 30 because 16 × 30 = 480. Make it a habit at home.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Choosing a partial quotient that is too large, like 20 sixteens for 288 ÷ 16, then not knowing how to back up.
  • Leaving out a zero in the quotient, so 1,632 ÷ 16 comes out as 12 instead of 102.
  • Ignoring what a remainder means in a story, so 130 people in rows of 12 gets 10 rows instead of 11.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

dividend
The number being divided.
divisor
The number you divide by.
quotient
The answer to a division problem.
remainder
The amount left over when a number can't be divided evenly.
partial quotient
Part of a division answer, found in chunks that are added at the end.
estimate
A close guess found by rounding or using easy numbers.
area model
A rectangle split into parts to show multiplication or division.
