Reveal Math Grade 5, Unit 7: Division of Decimals

In this unit, your child divides decimals: a decimal by a whole number, like $7.50 ÷ 3, and a number by a decimal, like 3 ÷ 0.5. They use models and place value, and check each quotient by multiplying back. It builds on decimal multiplication from the unit before and leads into adding and subtracting fractions.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Amara bikes 4.6 kilometers to the library and then 3.85 kilometers to the park. How far does she bike in all?

  • 4.31 kilometers
  • 7.45 kilometers
  • 8.45 kilometers

How you can help

  1. Split a cost evenly, like $13.50 shared by 3 people. Ask your child to divide, then multiply back to make sure the shares add up.
  2. Pour 2 cups of water using a 0.25 cup scoop, which is a 1/4 cup, and count the scoops. Talk about why dividing by a decimal less than 1 gives a bigger number.
  3. Find unit prices at the store, like a 6-pack for $4.20. Ask how much one costs, and which size is the better buy.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Expecting division to always make a number smaller, so they doubt an answer of 8 for 2 ÷ 0.25.
  • Forgetting the decimal point in the quotient, so $7.50 ÷ 3 comes out as 250 instead of $2.50.
  • Stopping at a remainder instead of writing a zero and dividing on, so 3.4 ÷ 4 ends at 0.8 instead of 0.85.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
