enVision Mathematics Grade 2, Topic 13: More Addition Subtraction and Length

In this unit, your child solves story problems about length and uses number lines to add and subtract within 100. A number line becomes a kind of ruler, where each number is a distance from 0 and each jump is a part of the problem. Next comes data, where measurements and counts are shown on graphs.

Question 1 of 3

A piece of yarn is 40 cm long. If you add another 30 cm piece to it, what is the total length of the yarn?

  • 10 cm
  • 70 cm
  • 60 cm

How you can help

  1. Measure two pieces of string, lay them end to end, and ask your child to find the total length before checking with a ruler.
  2. Draw a number line on the sidewalk with chalk, and have your child jump from 35 forward 6, or back 8, counting the jumps.
  3. Tell a length story on a walk: "This path is 80 steps long and we've walked 45. How many more steps?" Let your child draw it.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Counting the starting mark as a jump, so 35 + 6 lands on 40 instead of 41.
  • Jumping right to subtract or left to add on a number line without labels.
  • Leaving the unit off the answer, writing 27 instead of 27 inches.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

number line
A line with numbers in order at equal spaces, used to count, add, and subtract.
jump
A move along a number line that shows adding or subtracting.
equally spaced
With the same distance between every mark.
distance
How far it is from one point to another.
total length
How long things are when they are put end to end.
unknown
The missing number in a problem, often shown with a box or a question mark.
equation
