enVision Mathematics Grade 2, Topic 14: More Data
In this unit, your child collects and shows data, which is information gathered by counting or measuring. They make line plots from measurements, and they draw picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories. Then they use the graphs to answer questions like how many more or how many in all. Next, the year finishes with shapes.

What is my child learning in Topic 14?
- Measuring several objects to the nearest whole unit and showing the lengths on a line plot with an X for each. Learn more: Measuring things and making a line plot
- Drawing picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories and solving put-together, take-apart, and compare problems from them. Learn more: Making and reading picture graphs and bar graphs
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Sarah measured the length of her crayons. She found lengths of 5 inches, 6 inches, 5 inches, 7 inches, and 6 inches. How many crayons were 5 inches long?
- 2
- 5
- 1
How you can help
- Ask everyone at dinner their favorite fruit, then help your child make a bar graph and ask how many more picked one fruit than another.
- Measure a handful of leaves or sticks from a walk in inches and put them on a line plot together.
- Look at a graph in a newspaper or a picture book and ask your child to tell you two things it shows.
Where kids can get stuck
- Answering a compare question with a total, saying 10 for how many more apples than grapes when there are 6 and 4.
- Leaving a number off a line plot because nobody measured it, so the spacing goes uneven.
- Reading a bar's height from the wrong spot and ending up one off.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- data
- Information collected by counting, measuring, or asking questions.
- line plot
- A number line with an X above it for each measurement collected.
- picture graph
- A graph that uses small pictures to show how many are in each group.
- bar graph
- A graph that uses bars of different lengths to show and compare amounts.
- category
- One group on a graph, like apples or bananas.
- key
- The part of a graph that tells what each picture stands for.
- scale
- The numbers along a graph's edge that show how much each bar stands for.
- how many more
- A question that compares two amounts by finding the difference between them.
