enVision Mathematics Grade 4, Topic 14: Lines Angles and Shapes
In this unit, your child learns the building blocks of geometry: points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles. They spot parallel and perpendicular lines, sort shapes by their sides and angles, pick out right triangles, and find lines of symmetry. It follows the patterns unit and leads into measuring angles in degrees.

What is my child learning in Topic 14?
- Drawing and naming points, lines, segments, and rays; telling right, acute, and obtuse angles apart; and spotting parallel and perpendicular lines. Learn more: Spotting lines, rays, angles, and parallel lines
- Classifying triangles and quadrilaterals by parallel sides, perpendicular sides, and angle size, including right triangles. Learn more: Sorting shapes by their sides and angles
- Drawing lines of symmetry, and deciding whether a shape has none, one, or several. Learn more: Finding lines of symmetry
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
How many endpoints does a line segment have?
- Two
- One
- Zero
How you can help
- Go on a five-minute hunt at home for parallel and perpendicular lines, like table edges and window frames. Use the corner of a sheet of paper to test each right angle.
- Cut triangles, squares, and slanted shapes from an old cereal box. Ask your child to sort them into piles, like "has a right angle" and "no right angle," and explain each choice.
- Write capital letters together and decide which have a line of symmetry. A, M, and T have one; H and X have two; and F, G, and R have none.
Where kids can get stuck
- Mixing up lines, rays, and segments, like calling a segment with two endpoints a line.
- Thinking perpendicular lines must run straight up and across, and missing them when they are tilted.
- Leaving a square out of the rectangles, because it already has its own name.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- point
- An exact spot, shown with a dot and named with a capital letter.
- line
- A straight path that goes on forever in both directions.
- line segment
- A part of a line with two endpoints.
- ray
- A part of a line that starts at one point and goes on forever in one direction.
- parallel lines
- Lines that always stay the same distance apart and never meet.
- perpendicular lines
- Lines that meet or cross to make right angles.
- right triangle
- A triangle with one right angle.
- quadrilateral
- A flat shape with four straight sides.
- line of symmetry
- A line that folds a shape into two halves that match exactly.
