Eureka Math² Grade 1, Module 6: Attributes of Shapes, Time, and Equal Shares
In this unit, first graders end the year with shapes, time, and fractions in their simplest form. They sort shapes by attributes, or features, build composite shapes from smaller pieces, and split shapes into equal shares called halves and fourths. Those shares help them tell time to the half hour. It follows last unit's work with numbers to 100.

What is my child learning in Module 6?
- Telling and writing time to the hour and half hour, using what they know about halves of a circle. Learn more: Telling time to the hour and half hour
- Describing shapes by the attributes that define them, like a closed shape with four straight sides and four square corners. Learn more: What makes a triangle a triangle
- Combining shapes to make composite shapes, like a rectangle from two squares, and naming the shape that's made. Learn more: Building bigger shapes from smaller ones
- Partitioning circles and rectangles into halves and fourths, and describing the whole as two halves or four fourths. Learn more: Halves and quarters of circles and rectangles

Question 1 of 3
What time does the clock show?
- 12:00
- 2:00
- 1:00
How you can help
- Cut a paper rectangle into two squares and ask your child to put them back together. Ask what shape they make together and what shape each piece is.
- Share a round pancake or tortilla by folding it into halves and then fourths. Ask how many fourths make the whole and which share is bigger.
- Say the time aloud at the half hour, like "It's 2:30, half past two." Ask your child where the minute hand is and why it's called half past.
Where kids can get stuck
- Calling a rectangle made from two squares "two squares" instead of naming the new shape.
- Calling two pieces halves even when one is clearly bigger than the other.
- Writing half past two as 2:50, unsure how the half hour looks on a digital clock.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- attribute
- A feature of a shape, like how many sides or corners it has.
- closed shape
- A shape with no gaps or openings in its edge.
- composite shape
- A new shape made by putting smaller shapes together.
- equal shares
- Parts of a whole that are all the same size.
- half
- One of two equal parts of a whole.
- fourth
- One of four equal parts of a whole, also called a quarter.
- whole
- The full shape or amount before it is split into parts.
- half past
- Thirty minutes after the hour, like 3:30.
