Eureka Math² Grade 3, Module 2: Place Value Concepts Through 1,000
In this unit, your child works with numbers up to 1,000 by thinking in hundreds, tens, and ones. They round to the nearest ten or hundred to estimate, then add and subtract with strategies and written methods that regroup. This place value work follows the first multiplication unit and comes before the harder facts and multiplying by multiples of 10.

What is my child learning in Module 2?
- Rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 by finding the halfway point, such as 450 between 400 and 500. Learn more: Rounding to the nearest 10 or 100
- Adding and subtracting within 1,000 using place value, such as trading 1 hundred for 10 tens in 503 − 267. Learn more about adding within 1,000: Adding within 1,000 · Learn more about subtracting within 1,000
Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3
What is 43 rounded to the nearest 10?
- 50
- 40
- 30
How you can help
- Round prices at the store together, such as asking whether a $38 toy is closer to $30 or $40, and use the rounded prices to estimate a total.
- Ask how many more pages are in a 450-page book after your child reads 285, and let them explain their method (165).
- Write 347 on a slip of paper and ask your child what each digit is worth, then what 10 more and 100 more would be (357 and 447).
Where kids can get stuck
- Looking at the wrong digit, such as checking the 7 when rounding 347 to the nearest hundred.
- Rounding 450 down to 400, unsure which way a number exactly halfway goes.
- Getting tangled when subtracting across zeros, as in 600 − 248, and crossing out the wrong digits.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- place value
- What a digit is worth based on its place, like the 4 in 347 meaning 4 tens.
- digit
- One of the symbols 0 through 9 used to write numbers.
- round
- To swap a number for the closest ten or hundred, like 47 to 50.
- halfway
- The middle point, like 350 between 300 and 400.
- estimate
- A smart guess close to the real answer, often found by rounding.
- regroup
- To trade between places, like turning 1 hundred into 10 tens to subtract.
- sum
- The total you get when you add.
- difference
- How much more or less one number is than another.
