Eureka Math² Grade 3, Module 1: Multiplication and Division Concepts

In this unit, your child starts the year with what multiplication and division mean, using equal groups and arrays. They work with the 2s, 5s, and 10s and then the 3s and 4s, switch factors around to find facts, and solve one- and two-step story problems. Place value with numbers up to 1,000 comes next.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Hana has 3 plates with 5 strawberries on each plate. She writes 3 × 5. What does 3 × 5 tell her?

  • How many strawberries there are in all
  • How many strawberries are on each plate
  • How many plates she has

How you can help

  1. Set the table and ask how many forks are needed if 4 people each get 2, then say it as 4 groups of 2, or 4 × 2 = 8.
  2. Deal out a deck of cards to 4 players during a game night and talk about how many each person got and why it came out even.
  3. Make up a story on a walk, such as 3 dogs with 4 legs each, and ask your child to draw it as a quick picture before solving it (12).

Where kids can get stuck

  • Adding the two numbers instead of multiplying, so 4 groups of 5 becomes 9.
  • Treating 20 ÷ 4 and 4 ÷ 20 as the same, writing the total in the wrong place.
  • Doing the steps of a two-step problem in the wrong order, so the answer tells a different story.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

equal groups
Groups that all hold the same amount, like 3 plates with 4 crackers each.
array
Objects arranged in equal rows and columns.
multiply
To join equal groups to find how many in all.
divide
To split a total into equal groups or equal shares.
product
The total you get by multiplying, like 12 in 3 × 4 = 12.
quotient
The number you get when you divide, like 5 in 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
tape diagram
A bar split into equal parts to show the numbers in a story problem.
commutative property
The rule that 3 × 5 and 5 × 3 give the same answer.
skip count
To count forward by 2s, 5s, 10s, or another number.

Which math standards does Eureka Math² Grade 3 Module 1 cover?

Eureka Math² Grade 3 Module 1 covers these math standards. Each one links to what it means, sample questions, and teaching strategies.

  • 3.OA.A.1: Understand multiplication as equal groups, like 5 groups of 7.
  • 3.OA.A.2: Understand division as sharing equally or making equal groups.
  • 3.OA.A.3: Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems.
  • 3.OA.B.5: Break numbers apart to multiply, like 4 × 7 = (4 × 5) + (4 × 2).
  • 3.OA.C.7: Know the times tables by heart, and divide within 100.
  • 3.OA.D.8: Solve two-step word problems: add, subtract, multiply, or divide.
