Go Math! Grade 3, Chapter 2: Represent and Interpret Data

In this unit, your child reads and makes frequency tables, picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots. Pictures and bars can stand for more than one, so they skip count by 2s, 5s, or 10s to read them. They solve how-many-more problems and measure to the nearest half or quarter inch. Next, multiplication begins, building on that skip counting.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Look at the bar graph. How many more students chose Green as their favorite color than Blue?

A bar graph with three bars, each with its number printed above it. Red: 8. Blue: 4. Green: 10.
  • 10
  • 4
  • 6

How you can help

  1. Make a tally of birds, dogs, or bikes you see on a walk, then turn it into a picture graph where each picture stands for 2.
  2. Take a quick family vote on dinner or a movie, show it as a bar graph, and ask your child how many more people chose the winner.
  3. Ask your child to measure leaves or sticks from a walk to the nearest quarter inch, then line them up from shortest to longest.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Counting each picture as one when the key says each picture stands for 5.
  • Reading a bar that ends between grid lines as the nearest line instead of the number halfway between.
  • Confusing half-inch and quarter-inch marks on a ruler, reading 2 1/2 as 2 1/4.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
