Go Math! Grade 3, Chapter 7: Division Facts and Strategies
In this unit, your child learns division facts for 2 through 10 using multiplication facts they know. They learn the rules for 0 and 1 in division, find missing numbers in sentences like ? ÷ 3 = 6, and solve one- and two-step story problems with all four operations. Fractions come next, and they also start with sharing a whole into equal parts.

What is my child learning in Chapter 7?
- Solving division stories like 42 children split into 7 teams, then checking the answer with a multiplication fact. Learn more: Multiplying and dividing in story problems
- Finding missing numbers in division sentences, like ? ÷ 3 = 6, where the unknown is the total being shared. Learn more: Finding the missing number, like 7 x ? = 56
- Recalling division facts for 2 through 10, such as 72 ÷ 8 = 9, by thinking of the matching times fact. Learn more about knowing the times tables by heart: Knowing the times tables by heart · Learn more about dividing within 100
- Solving two-step problems with all four operations, such as 24 apples packed in bags of 6 with 2 bags given away. Learn more: Story problems with two steps

Question 1 of 3
Ravi finds 16 socks in the laundry. He puts them into pairs, with 2 socks in each pair. How many pairs does he make?
- 8
- 32
- 14
How you can help
- Ask a division riddle on a walk, such as sharing some stickers among 3 friends so each got 6, and ask how many there were (18).
- Deal 30 playing cards among 5 players before a game, and ask your child to predict how many each will get before you check (6).
- Ask your child for a plan before solving a two-step problem, such as 24 apples bagged in 6s with 2 bags given to neighbors.
Where kids can get stuck
- Dividing 6 by 3 to fill in ? ÷ 3 = 6, getting 2 instead of the total, 18.
- Thinking 0 ÷ 6 is 6, mixing up the rules for 0 and 1 in division.
- Doing the right operations in the wrong order on a two-step problem, so the story no longer matches.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- quotient
- The number you get when you divide, like 5 in 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
- dividend
- The total being divided.
- divisor
- The number you divide by; it can be the number of groups or the size of each group.
- unknown
- The number we are trying to find, shown by a box, a question mark, or a letter.
- inverse
- The opposite operation; division undoes multiplication.
- fact family
- A group of related multiplication and division facts made from the same three numbers.
- two-step problem
- A word problem that needs two operations to solve.
