Go Math! Kindergarten, Chapter 11: Measurement

In this unit, your child learns to compare things by size and weight. Kindergartners line up two objects to see which is longer or shorter, stand them side by side to compare height, and hold one in each hand to feel which is heavier. After describing solid shapes, children now describe objects by how big they are, and next they sort objects into groups and count them.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Is a feather heavy or light?

  • Heavy
  • Light
  • Neither

How you can help

  1. Line up a spoon and a fork on the table with their ends even, and ask your child which is longer and which is shorter.
  2. Stand two cereal boxes or two water bottles side by side on the counter, and ask your child which is taller and how they know.
  3. Hand your child a pillow and a book, one in each hand, and ask which is heavier, talking about how bigger is not always heavier.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Comparing two pencils without lining up their ends, so the one that sticks out looks longer.
  • Calling one child taller while one stands on a step, instead of both on the same floor.
  • Saying the bigger object is heavier, without lifting both to check.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
