Reveal Math Kindergarten, Unit 9: More Addition and Subtraction
In this unit, your child takes numbers apart in different ways, finds the number that makes 10, and gets quick at adding and subtracting within 5. After learning what adding and subtracting mean in the last two units, your child now sees how numbers fit together. Flat shapes come next.

What is my child learning in Unit 9?
- Breaking numbers up to 10 into two parts in more than one way, and showing each with a drawing or equation. Learn more: Splitting numbers up to 10 into two parts
- Finding how many more make 10 from any number 1 to 9, often by filling a ten-frame, a box of 10 spaces. Learn more: Finding the number that makes 10
- Adding and subtracting within 5 fluently, which means quickly and correctly, such as 3 + 2 and 4 - 3. Learn more about adding fluently within 5: Adding fluently within 5 · Learn more about subtracting fluently within 5
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
There are 5 ladybugs in total. Some are on a leaf and the rest are on a flower. If 2 ladybugs are on the leaf, how many ladybugs are on the flower?
- 2
- 3
- 4
How you can help
- Draw a ten-frame, two rows of 5 boxes, and put cereal pieces in some of the boxes. Ask how many empty boxes are left to make 10.
- Split 5 crackers between two plates in as many ways as you can find: 5 and 0, 4 and 1, 3 and 2. Say each split aloud together.
- Ask quick facts on a walk, like 2 + 2 or 5 - 1, and see if your child can answer without counting on fingers.
Where kids can get stuck
- Guessing how many more make 10, saying 8 needs 3 more instead of 2.
- Thinking 5 = 3 + 2 is wrong because the answer comes first instead of last.
- Mixing up related facts, answering 5 for 4 - 1 because 4 and 1 go with 5.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
