Reveal Math Kindergarten, Unit 10: 2D Shapes

In this unit, your child names flat shapes, such as circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, and hexagons; finds them in everyday objects; and describes where things are. They also compare shapes by counting sides and corners. After a unit on adding and subtracting, this one turns to shapes and leads into solid shapes next.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

What shape is a slice of pizza?

  • Triangle
  • Circle
  • Square

How you can help

  1. Look for flat shapes on a walk or ride, such as rectangle windows, circle wheels, and triangle yield signs. Ask your child where each one is: above, below, or beside something.
  2. Draw a few shapes on paper and turn the page around. Ask your child to name each shape again in its new position.
  3. Count the sides and corners of a book, a napkin, and a plate. Talk about which shapes match and why the round plate has no corners.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Rejecting a long, thin triangle because it does not look like the usual triangle.
  • Calling a rectangle lying on its side a different shape from one standing up.
  • Describing shapes by color or size instead of counting their sides and corners.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
