Zearn Math Grade 2, Mission 6: Foundations of Multiplication and Division

In this unit, your child builds the foundations of multiplication and division. They make equal groups, add the rows of an array, split rectangles into rows and columns of same-size squares, and decide whether numbers are odd or even. It builds on addition and subtraction within 1,000 and leads into problem solving with length, money, and data.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Is 16 an even or odd number?

  • Even
  • Odd
  • Neither

How you can help

  1. Set out spoons or toys in equal groups, like 4 groups of 3, and ask how many in all. Then rearrange them into an array of 4 rows.
  2. Ask whether the number of people at dinner is odd or even. Can everyone have a partner, or is one person left over?
  3. Draw a rectangle and help your child split it into 3 rows of 4 squares. Ask them to say the adding sentence that matches, 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Adding the rows and the columns, answering 8 for 3 rows of 5 instead of adding 5 + 5 + 5.
  • Thinking a big number like 18 must be odd, because it seems too large to share evenly.
  • Drawing rows with different numbers of squares, so the grid is not an array of equal rows.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

equal groups
Groups that all have the same number of things.
array
Objects set out in equal rows and columns, like eggs in a carton.
row
A line of things that goes across.
column
A line of things that goes up and down.
repeated addition
Adding the same number again and again, like 5 + 5 + 5.
even
A number that splits into pairs with none left over, like 6 or 14.
odd
A number that has one left over when you make pairs, like 7 or 15.
