3.OA.B.6: Use a times fact to divide: 32 ÷ 8 = 4 because 4 × 8 = 32
3.OA.B.6 is a 3rd grade Common Core math standard in Operations & Algebraic Thinking. Here’s what it really covers, and how you can help your students learn it.
By Robert “Bobby” BarnettMath teacher, parent, and founder of Bobby’s Math Club
The standard
Understand division as an unknown-factor problem. For example, find 32 ÷ 8 by finding the number that makes 32 when multiplied by 8.
In plain words
Use a times fact to divide: 32 ÷ 8 = 4 because 4 × 8 = 32.
Sample questions from student practice
These questions from Bobby's Math Club are the kinds of questions your students will see. You can try answering them to see what a student might see.
Question 1 of 3
If you know that 6 × 4 = 24, what is the answer to 24 ÷ 6?
- 24
- 4
- 6
Where students can get stuck
- Counting down one at a time from the larger number instead of thinking of a times fact, which is slow and error-prone.
- Recalling the wrong fact, such as answering 42 ÷ 6 with 6, without checking that 6 x 6 is 36.
- Writing a fact family with numbers in the wrong spots, such as 4 ÷ 32 = 8.
Effective teaching strategies
- Ask students to turn each division fact into a missing-factor question, such as 8 times what number makes 32.
- Have students write a fact family for each set of three numbers, such as 4, 8, and 32, and check that the largest number is always the product.
- Model checking a division answer by multiplying back, so students catch a slip such as 42 ÷ 6 = 6 when 6 × 6 is only 36.
