Find 10 more or 10 less

When your child can say right away that 10 more than 43 is 53, it shows they are thinking in tens, not ones, and adding and subtracting get much faster. This mental skill is the start of jumps like 47 + 30 in 2nd grade, where children also find 100 more or 100 less than a number. It makes everyday mental math easier too, like counting money in dimes.

In this video, your child will learn to find ten more or ten less.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

34 + 10 = ?

Example 2

53 − 10 = ?

Your child's turn

87 − 10 = ?

The three key steps

  1. 1For ten more, add one ten.
  2. 2For ten less, take away one ten.
  3. 3The ones stay the same.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Counting on by ones, ten separate times, to find 10 more than 56, and often miscounting along the way.
  • Changing the wrong digit, saying 10 more than 34 is 35, because adding seems to change the last digit.
  • Getting stuck near the ends, like 10 less than 15 or 10 more than 92, where the answer has a different number of digits.

The lesson shows every step, so your child sees why it works. Read our parent's guide to 10 more or 10 less in your head →

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice 10 more or 10 less in your head, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
