Add within 1000

Seeing that ten ones make a ten, and ten tens make a hundred, is what will make big numbers feel manageable for your child. It's the idea behind every trade your child makes when adding, so the steps make sense instead of feeling like rules to memorize. And it comes up for real, such as adding the points from two games or the people at two school events.

In this video, your child will learn to add within one thousand.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

236 + 148 = ?

Example 2

268 + 157 = ?

Your child's turn

347 + 185 = ?

The three key steps

  1. 1Ones, then tens, then hundreds.
  2. 210 ones make a ten.
  3. 310 tens make a hundred.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Writing each column's total straight into the answer, so 365 + 248 becomes 51013 instead of 613.
  • Forgetting the new hundred made from the tens, so 271 + 154 comes out as 325 instead of 425.
  • Lining the numbers up by their first digit, so 352 + 41 is added as 352 + 410 and gives 762.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice adding within 1,000, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
