Divide by sharing or making groups
Division is a tool your child will lean on for years, as the partner of multiplication. It grows into remainders and longer division in 4th grade, and it opens the door to fractions, since 1/4 is one whole shared equally among 4. Everyday moments use it too, from splitting 24 cookies among 6 friends to working out how many weeks are in 35 days.
In this video, your child will learn to see dividing as sharing or making groups.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.
Three problems, each a little harder
Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1
6 ÷ 2 = ?

Example 2
12 ÷ 4 = ?

Your child's turn
20 ÷ 5 = ?
The three key steps
- 1Divide: make equal groups.
- 2Share: count one group.
- 3Or make groups: count them.
Mistakes to listen for
- Sharing items out unevenly, giving one friend more than another, and still writing down an answer.
- Treating 56 ÷ 8 and 8 ÷ 56 as the same, the way order does not matter in multiplication.
- Mixing up whether the answer means how many in each group or how many groups there are.

Questions parents ask
Does my child need an account to watch?
No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice division as sharing into equal groups, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.
What happens when my child answers a question?
A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.
Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?
Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
Where can I learn more?
