Make and compare two number patterns

Spotting how two patterns move together is your child's first real glimpse of how one quantity depends on another. Noticing that one list is always double another grows into the tables, graphs, and equations of 6th and 7th grade, and later into the straight-line graphs of science class, where distance grows with time or cost grows with the number of items bought.

In this video, your child will learn to make and compare two number patterns.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

A starts at 0 and adds 3. B starts at 0 and adds 6. B = ? × A

Example 2

A starts at 0 and adds 2. B starts at 0 and adds 6. B = ? × A

Your child's turn

A starts at 0 and adds 2. B starts at 0 and adds 8. B = ? × A

The three key steps

  1. 1Write each pattern.
  2. 2Each ordered pair is a point.
  3. 3Compare the pairs.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Comparing numbers within one list, so they notice "it goes up by 3" but miss that each second-list number is double its partner.
  • Swapping the order in an ordered pair, so they plot (6, 3) instead of (3, 6).
  • Starting the second pattern at the wrong number, so the two lists no longer line up term by term.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice comparing two number patterns on a grid, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.

Where can I learn more?
