Add and find how many in all

Putting things together and counting them all is your child's first taste of adding. Doing it with crackers, blocks, and fingers lets your child see and feel what adding means. That matters. In kindergarten, this hands-on start gives meaning to 3 + 2 = 5 and helps with story problems within 10. And adding is everywhere at home, from setting one more place at the table to counting friends as two more join a game.

In this video, your child will learn to add to find how many in all.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

2 + 1 = ?

Example 2

2 + 2 = ?

Your child's turn

3 + 2 = ?

The three key steps

  1. 1Start with the first number.
  2. 2Add the second number.
  3. 3Count them all!

Mistakes to listen for

  • Counting only the things that were added, so 4 blocks and 2 more gives the answer 2 instead of 6.
  • Counting one finger twice while putting two hands together, so 3 fingers and 2 fingers come out as 6.
  • Guessing the total from how big the pile looks instead of counting, so 4 grapes and 3 more becomes "ten."

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice adding with objects and fingers, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
