Long, tall, heavy, full and empty

Words like heavy and tall open the door to measuring for your child, long before any ruler or scale. Your child needs to see that length, height, and weight are different, so a long ribbon is not assumed to be heavy. These words lead to comparing two objects in kindergarten, measuring with paper clips or cubes in 1st grade, and using inches, centimeters, and pounds later. They also help with cooking and shopping.

In this video, your child will learn to use words like long, short and heavy.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

Which one is tall: the pencil or the crayon?

Example 2

Which one is heavy?

Your child's turn

Which one is light?

The three key steps

  1. 1Long and short tell how long, and tall tells how high.
  2. 2Heavy and light tell how heavy.
  3. 3The heavy side goes down.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Using "big" for everything, so a long pencil, a heavy rock, and a tall glass are all big.
  • Thinking a larger object must be heavier, and being surprised when a big balloon is lighter than a small rock.
  • Mixing up words for length and height, such as calling a rope lying on the floor tall instead of long.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice describing length and weight: longer, heavier, taller, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
