enVision Mathematics Grade 2, Topic 8: Work with Time and Money
In this unit, your child tells time to the nearest five minutes on analog clocks, the kind with hands, and on digital clocks, and uses a.m. and p.m. They also count coins and dollar bills and solve money problems. Both use skip-counting by 5s and 10s, which leads straight into counting and place value with numbers to 1,000 next.

Question 1 of 3
The hour hand is on the 8 and the minute hand is on the 12. What is the time?
- 12:40
- 8:00
- 8:12
How you can help
- Ask your child to read a clock with hands before dinner and after, and to tell you how they counted the minutes by 5s.
- Lay out a quarter, two dimes, and three pennies and ask for the total, counting from the biggest coin: 25, 35, 45, 46, 47, 48.
- Play store with toys and price tags under a dollar, and let your child pay with coins and say how much change is due.
Where kids can get stuck
- Reading 3:50 as 4:50 because the hour hand is almost at the 4.
- Writing 25 cents as $25 or 25$, mixing up the dollar and cent signs.
- Mixing up a.m. and p.m., saying they eat breakfast at 7:00 p.m.
