enVision Mathematics Grade 3, Topic 10: Multiply by Multiples of 10

In this unit, your child multiplies one-digit numbers by multiples of 10, like 4 × 70 or 6 × 30. They use facts they already know and place value: 4 × 70 is 4 groups of 7 tens, which is 28 tens, or 280. This builds on adding and subtracting within 1,000 and leads into story problems with all four operations.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

3 × 90 is the same as 3 groups of 9 tens. How many tens is that in all?

  • 12 tens
  • 27 tens
  • 270 tens

How you can help

  1. Count out dimes and ask what 6 dimes are worth (60 cents), then ask what 4 piles of 6 dimes would be worth (240 cents).
  2. Plan a day out by asking how many minutes are in 3 hours, using 60 minutes in an hour, so 3 × 60 = 180 minutes.
  3. Use packs of 10 crayons or pencils to show that 4 groups of 20 is 4 × 2 tens, which is 8 tens, or 80.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Stopping at the basic fact, so 9 × 30 is answered as 27 instead of 270.
  • Writing the wrong number of zeros when the fact ends in zero, so 5 × 80 becomes 40 or 4,000 instead of 400.
  • Using an add-a-zero trick without knowing why, so they cannot tell whether 3 × 60 = 180 makes sense.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
