enVision Mathematics Grade 4, Topic 11: Represent and Interpret Decimals

In this unit, your child connects fractions to decimals. They rename tenths as hundredths, write fractions like 62/100 as 0.62, place decimals on a number line, and compare decimals like 0.09 and 0.1. Money helps make sense of it all. It builds on the fraction units before it and leads into measurement conversions.

Question 1 of 3

How many hundredths make the same amount as 1/10?

  • 1
  • 10
  • 100

How you can help

  1. Count coins together. Put out 2 dimes and 7 pennies and ask your child to write the amount as 27/100 of a dollar and as $0.27.
  2. Draw a 10-by-10 grid and shade 4 full columns. Ask your child to name the shaded part as 4 tenths and as 40 hundredths, and explain why both fit.
  3. Compare prices under a dollar at the store, like $0.89 and $0.95. Ask which costs more, then whether 1 dime or 9 pennies is more money.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Renaming 3/10 as 3/100, changing the denominator but not multiplying the numerator by 10.
  • Reading 0.62 as "point sixty-two" without knowing it means 62 hundredths.
  • Thinking 0.25 is greater than 0.3 because 25 is greater than 3.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
