4.NF.C.6: Write tenths and hundredths as decimals, like 4/10 = 0.4
4.NF.C.6 is a 4th grade Common Core math standard in Number & Operations - Fractions. Here’s what it really covers, and how you can help your students learn it.

The standard
Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram.
In plain words
Write tenths and hundredths as decimals, like 4/10 = 0.4.
Sample questions from student practice
These questions from Bobby's Math Club are the kinds of questions your students will see. You can try answering them to see what a student might see.
Question 1 of 3
Point P is on a number line from 0 to 1. What decimal does point P show?
- 0.3
- 0.03
- 0.7
Where students can get stuck
- Writing 7/100 as 0.7, leaving out the zero in the tenths place, which makes it ten times too big.
- Reading 0.62 as "point sixty-two" without knowing it means sixty-two hundredths.
- Thinking 0.50 is more than 0.5 because it has more digits, rather than seeing both as five tenths.
Effective teaching strategies
- Shade 7 squares of a 10 by 10 grid and have students write the amount as 7/100 and as 0.07, with a zero holding the tenths place.
- Ask students to place 0.62 in a chart with tenths and hundredths columns and read it as sixty-two hundredths.
- Show 0.5 and 0.50 on two copies of the same grid and ask why 5 columns and 50 squares are the same shaded amount.
