Eureka Math Grade 4, Module 6: Decimal Fractions
In this unit, your child sees decimals as another way to write fractions with denominators of 10 and 100. They write 3/10 as 0.3, add tenths and hundredths, compare decimals, and use them in story problems about money and measurement. It follows the long fraction unit and leads into the final unit, measurement with multiplication.

- Comparing and ordering decimals to the hundredths place, like 0.6, 0.58, and 0.65, using place value. Learn more: Comparing decimals like 0.09 and 0.1
- Solving money and measurement story problems with decimals, like adding $1.45 and $2.30 or comparing 0.75 meters with 0.8 meters. Learn more: Story problems about distance, time, and money
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
How many hundredths make the same amount as 1/10?
- 1
- 10
- 100
How you can help
- Lay out coins for $0.40 and $0.04 side by side. Talk about why the two amounts look alike but are very different, and write each as a fraction of a dollar.
- Read a scale that shows tenths, like 2.3 kilograms, and have your child say it as "two and three tenths." Then compare it with another reading, like 2.25.
- Ask your child to add two prices at the store, like $1.45 and $2.30, then find the change from a $5 bill.
Where kids can get stuck
- Thinking 0.50 is more than 0.5 because it has more digits.
- Swinging to the opposite rule, that the shorter decimal always wins, and saying 0.4 is greater than 0.45.
- Lining up money by the last digit, treating $6.75 and $5 as 675 and 5.
