enVision Mathematics Grade 4, Topic 2: Fluently Add and Subtract Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
In this unit, your child adds and subtracts large numbers with the column method until it is quick and accurate, including regrouping across zeros. They also solve story problems that take more than one step and use estimates to check their answers. It builds on last unit's place value and leads into multiplying by one-digit numbers.

What is my child learning in Topic 2?
- Adding and subtracting numbers in the thousands and beyond with the column method, regrouping across places and zeros. Learn more about adding numbers up to a million: Adding numbers up to a million · Learn more about subtracting numbers up to a million
- Solving two-step addition and subtraction stories, and using rounding to check that the answer is reasonable. Learn more: Multi-step story problems and leftovers
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
A beach crew picked up 1,874 bottle caps on Saturday and 2,153 on Sunday. How many bottle caps did the crew pick up in all?
- 3,927
- 4,027
- 3,974
How you can help
- Plan a trip on paper. Give your child two distances, like 1,248 miles there and 1,376 miles back, and ask for the total, then how many more miles the return is.
- Ask a savings question: "A bike costs $300 and we have saved $187. How much more do we need?" Let your child explain each regrouping step out loud.
- Estimate a shopping total before checkout by rounding each price. Then compare your child's estimate with the real total and talk about whether it was close.
Where kids can get stuck
- Getting stuck subtracting across zeros, as in 5,000 − 2,346, and answering 3,346 instead of 2,654.
- Lining numbers up by their left edges, so 2,375 + 418 comes out much too large.
- Stopping after the first step of a story problem, before reaching what the question actually asks.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- algorithm
- A step-by-step method for solving a problem, like adding numbers in columns.
- regroup
- To trade 10 of one place for 1 of the next, like 10 tens for 1 hundred.
- sum
- The answer to an addition problem.
- difference
- The answer to a subtraction problem.
- estimate
- A close guess, often made with rounded numbers, to check whether an answer makes sense.
- reasonable
- Making sense; a reasonable answer is close to the estimate and fits the story.
- multistep problem
- A word problem that needs more than one calculation to solve.
