enVision Mathematics Grade 4, Topic 5: Use Strategies and Properties to Divide by 1-Digit Numbers

In this unit, your child divides numbers up to four digits by a one-digit number, using place value, partial quotients, and the link between multiplying and dividing. They find remainders and decide what each one means in a story. It builds on the multiplying units before it, and leads into solving problems with all four operations.

Question 1 of 3

What is 87 ÷ 5?

  • 17
  • 17 R 2
  • 17.2

How you can help

  1. Share 50 pieces of dry pasta equally among 6 cups. Each cup gets 8 with 2 left over, so 50 ÷ 6 = 8 R2. Talk about why the leftover is less than 6.
  2. Ask a packing question before an outing: "We have 22 water bottles and each bag holds 5. How many bags?" Talk about why the 2 leftover bottles mean 5 bags.
  3. Ask your child to prove each division answer: multiply the quotient by the divisor, add the remainder, and check that it matches the starting number.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Skipping the zero in a quotient, so 824 ÷ 4 becomes 26 instead of 206.
  • Answering "4 bags with 2 left over" when the extra bottles need a fifth bag.
  • Leaving a remainder of 7 when dividing by 5, without seeing that 7 holds another group of 5.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

quotient
The answer to a division problem.
dividend
The number being divided, like 87 in 87 ÷ 5.
divisor
The number you divide by, like 5 in 87 ÷ 5.
remainder
The amount left over when a number can't be split into equal groups exactly.
partial quotients
Dividing in chunks, like taking out 10 groups and then 5 more, and adding the chunks.
interpret
To decide what an answer, like a remainder, means in the story.
