enVision Mathematics Grade 5, Topic 5: Use Models and Strategies to Divide Whole Numbers
In this unit, your child divides larger numbers by two-digit divisors, such as 1,512 ÷ 36. They estimate with friendly numbers, use area models and partial quotients, and check each answer by multiplying back. After multiplying decimals, the class slows down on whole numbers so the steps feel steady before using them to divide decimals in the next unit.

What is my child learning in Topic 5?
- Dividing numbers up to four digits by two-digit divisors, using estimates, partial quotients, and multiplication to check the quotient. Learn more: Dividing by two-digit numbers, like 480 ÷ 16
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Which equation can you use to find 1,350 ÷ 45?
- 45 × ? = 1,350
- 1,350 × 45 = ?
- 45 ÷ 1,350 = ?
How you can help
- Plan a class party: 1,200 crackers shared among 24 kids. Ask your child to estimate with friendly numbers, then find that each child gets 50.
- Ask how many dozen are in 300 eggs, then in 1,000 eggs. Let your child divide by 12 and explain what the remainder means in the second case, 83 dozen with 4 left over.
- Check a division problem in reverse at dinner: if 756 ÷ 18 = 42, ask your child to multiply 42 × 18 to prove it.
Where kids can get stuck
- Picking a first chunk that is too big, like 12 × 40 = 480 for 384 ÷ 12, then getting stuck.
- Writing the partial quotients side by side, so 20 and 4 become 204 instead of adding to 24.
- Ignoring what the remainder means, so 100 students in vans of 12 needs 8 vans instead of 9.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- dividend
- The amount you start with and split up in a division problem.
- divisor
- The number that tells how many groups, or how big each group is, in division.
- quotient
- What you get when you divide one number by another.
- remainder
- The amount left over when a number does not divide evenly.
- partial quotient
- Part of a quotient found in one step of division, added up for the whole answer.
- estimate
- To find an answer that is about right by rounding to friendly numbers first.
- compatible numbers
- Nearby numbers that are easy to divide in your head, like 1,500 ÷ 30.
