Eureka Math² Grade 1, Module 4: Comparison and Composition of Lengths
In this unit, first graders compare lengths, order objects from shortest to longest, and measure by putting same-size units end to end. They also combine lengths, like two crayons laid in a line, and answer questions about data, or information, they collect. After the addition properties of the last unit, this applies those numbers, and next they compare and add numbers to 100.

What is my child learning in Module 4?
- Comparing two lengths by lining up their ends, and using a third object to compare things that can't sit side by side. Learn more: Ordering three things from shortest to longest
- Measuring with same-size units laid end to end and adding two measured lengths together to find a total length. Learn more: Measuring length by lining up same-size objects
- Collecting answers to a question, organizing them in a chart, and comparing how many are in each category. Learn more: Sorting, tallying, and reading simple charts
Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3
Which object is usually the longest?
- A book
- A bus
- A shoe
How you can help
- Lay two spoons end to end and measure them together with paper clips, then measure each alone. Ask whether the two lengths add up to the total.
- Cut a piece of string as long as your child's arm and use it to find things in the house that are longer, shorter, or about the same.
- Ask everyone at dinner to pick their favorite of three colors, and make a quick chart. Ask which color got the most and how many more than the least.
Where kids can get stuck
- Calling a pencil longer because it sticks out farther, without lining up the ends.
- Letting paper clips overlap, so the measured length comes out too long.
- Losing or double counting votes, so the chart totals don't match the people asked.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- length
- How long something is from one end to the other.
- longer
- Having more length than something else.
- shorter
- Having less length than something else.
- unit
- A same-size thing used to measure, like a paper clip or a cube.
- measure
- Find out how long something is by counting units.
- overlap
- When units lie on top of each other, which makes a measurement wrong.
- data
- Information collected to answer a question, like everyone's favorite fruit.
- category
- A group that things are sorted into.
