1.MD.C.4: Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories

1.MD.C.4 is a 1st grade Common Core math standard in Measurement & Data. Here’s what it really covers, and how you can help your students learn it.

By Math teacher, parent, and founder of Bobby’s Math Club

The standard

Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.

In plain words

Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories.

Sample questions from student practice

These questions from Bobby's Math Club are the kinds of questions your students will see. You can try answering them to see what a student might see.

Question 1 of 3

The bar graph shows students' favorite fruits. How many students chose bananas as their favorite fruit?

A bar graph with three bars, each with its number printed above it. Apples: 4. Bananas: 5. Oranges: 3.
  • 4
  • 3
  • 5

Where students can get stuck

  • Answering only for the biggest group when asked how many there are altogether, instead of adding all three groups.
  • Naming the apple total, 6, for "How many more chose apples than grapes?" instead of finding the difference, 3.
  • Losing or double counting items while sorting, so the group totals no longer add up to the whole collection.

Effective teaching strategies

  1. Sort 15 crayons into three color groups, moving each crayon once while saying its group, then have students count how many are in each group.
  2. Ask “How many in all?” and have students add all three group totals, such as 6, 5, and 4, and check that the sum matches the 15 crayons.
  3. Show a picture graph where 6 chose apples and 3 chose grapes, and have students pair each grape with an apple to find that 3 apples are left over.
