Eureka Math Grade 1, Module 3: Ordering and Comparing Length Measurements as Numbers
In this unit, first graders compare and order lengths, measure with length units, same-size objects laid end to end, and describe each length as a number. They also sort data, or information, into groups and answer questions about it. After adding and subtracting within 20 in the last unit, this puts numbers to use, and next they work with place value to 40.

What is my child learning in Module 3?
- Comparing lengths directly and with a string, then ordering three objects from shortest to longest. Learn more: Ordering three things from shortest to longest
- Measuring with cubes or other same-size units, end to end with no gaps, and recording the length as a number. Learn more: Measuring length by lining up same-size objects
- Organizing data into up to three categories and answering how many in each, how many in all, and how many more. Learn more: Sorting, tallying, and reading simple charts
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Which object is usually the longest?
- A book
- A bus
- A shoe
How you can help
- Use a piece of string to compare two things that can't sit side by side, like a door and a bed. Ask which is longer and how the string shows it.
- Measure a few toys with paper clips laid end to end, then line the toys up from shortest to longest and say each length aloud.
- Ask family members to choose among three snacks and record the votes in a simple chart. Ask how many more chose the favorite than the least favorite.
Where kids can get stuck
- Placing the middle-length object at one end of the row when ordering three.
- Starting to measure away from the edge, or counting a unit that hangs past the end.
- Naming one category's total when asked how many more chose it than another.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

- length
- How long something is from one end to the other.
- compare
- Look at two things to see which is bigger, longer, or the same.
- unit
- A same-size thing used to measure, like a paper clip or a cube.
- measure
- Find out how long something is by counting units.
- data
- Information collected to answer a question, like everyone's favorite fruit.
- category
