enVision Mathematics Grade 1, Topic 6: Represent and Interpret Data

In this unit, first graders collect data, or information, sort it into up to three categories, and show it with tally marks, picture graphs, and simple charts. They answer questions like how many in all and how many more one category has than another. It puts their adding and subtracting from the last unit to work, before they count much higher, to 120, next.

Question 1 of 3

The bar graph shows students' favorite fruits. How many students chose bananas as their favorite fruit?

  • 5

How you can help

  1. Sort the laundry into shirts, pants, and socks, and keep a tally for each pile. Ask which pile has the most and how many more it has than the smallest.
  2. Ask family members to vote on dinner from three choices and draw a picture graph, one face for each vote. Ask how many people voted in all.
  3. Count the colors of cars that pass on a walk, using tally marks bundled in fives. Ask how many more red cars than blue cars you saw.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Naming the biggest group's number when asked how many more, instead of finding the difference.
  • Answering for only one category when the question asks how many in all.
  • Counting a sorted item twice, so the category totals don't match the whole collection.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
